Harder to guess a stolen phone’s lock
Google announced stronger Android theft protections on 27 January, including longer waits after failed screen-lock attempts. Repeating the same wrong guess no longer consumes additional attempts, a change intended to avoid accidental lockouts. Android 16 and later gain a separate setting for Failed Authentication Lock.
Recovery has its own checks
Remote Lock adds an optional security challenge on Android 10 and later. Google also described Identity Check coverage for apps using Android’s biometric prompt. For newly activated devices in Brazil, Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock are enabled by default. These are different layers of protection: the January announcement does not establish that every Android device receives every feature, or that the Brazilian defaults apply worldwide.
