A desktop starting point
Anthropic introduced Cowork on 12 January, bringing the task-running approach of Claude Code into its desktop app for work beyond programming. The dated release notes describe a research preview for Max subscribers using macOS, running in an isolated virtual machine with access to local files and connected tools.
That scope matters. A user could give the assistant material to work with on the computer, rather than repeatedly copying information into a chat. The launch also put the permissions around those files closer to the centre of the experience.
Access widened within days
The same record shows Cowork reaching Pro subscribers on 16 January. Both January entries specify macOS; they do not establish a Windows launch. For a retrospective, this was an early access change in how Claude was packaged: the coding agent’s methods were moving into general knowledge work, while the product remained explicitly labelled a research preview. A preview also leaves room for the interface and workflow to change.
