The rollout came in two steps

OpenAI introduced GPT-5.5 on 23 April, starting its rollout in ChatGPT and Codex for paid subscribers. The announcement placed the main model on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans, with GPT-5.5 Pro available through the higher subscription tiers.

The launch targeted tasks that move between code, online research, data and computer applications. OpenAI claimed that the model could handle more of the planning and checking while matching GPT-5.4’s latency per generated token.

API developers waited another day

An update dated 24 April confirms that GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro then became available in the API. The advertised standard rates for the main model were $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens. That higher price makes task-level efficiency relevant: using fewer tokens can offset a higher rate, but the announcement alone does not establish the cost of a particular production workflow. The dated API update also distinguishes a promised integration from one that had actually opened.
