A two-stage rollout

OpenAI began a limited GPT-5.6 preview on 26 June with Sol, Terra and Luna, describing different balances of capability, speed and cost. It initially restricted participation to trusted partners while testing safeguards. The broader launch followed on 9 July, rather than making the June preview immediately available to every customer.

The family added max reasoning effort and an ultra approach coordinating multiple agents for harder work. OpenAI also highlighted programmatic tool calling, which can process intermediate tool data without sending every item through the model. Its performance and efficiency claims depend on the evaluation and effort configuration. Developers moving from preview to production therefore had more to inspect than a model name: availability, orchestration, usage and safeguard behaviour all formed part of the release.
