OpenAI agrees to acquire Astral, maker of uv and Ruff

OpenAI announced an agreement to acquire Astral on 19 March. Astral builds uv for Python project and environment management, Ruff for linting and formatting, and ty for type checking. OpenAI said it planned to support those open-source products and explore closer integration with Codex.

The acquisition remained subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval. OpenAI explicitly said the companies would operate independently until closing. Its stated goal is to extend Codex across more of the development process, from planning changes to running tools and verifying results. The March statement therefore provides both a product direction and a boundary: planned integration should not be treated as an already completed change to the tools.
