PhonePe and Visa announce cardless payments with phased availability

PhonePe and Visa announced new payment features on September 9, including Android Tap to Pay, international Scan to Pay and Smart Accept for merchants. The announcement builds on Visa card tokenisation already available through PhonePe.

Availability differs by feature. Tap to Pay started a phased rollout that day. International QR payments were unveiled for Visa-supported codes in 14 markets, with user rollout still to follow. Smart Accept is designed to let small merchants accept contactless cards and tokenised mobile wallets on a smartphone, without a separate card terminal. PhonePe says those card transactions will appear alongside existing QR payments in its merchant dashboard. The partnership connects consumer card use and merchant acceptance, but its announcement should not be read as universal immediate availability.
