The model can change after release
Microsoft researchers reported on 9 February that a training approach normally used to shape helpful behaviour could also weaken safety alignment when the reward objective was changed. Their account describes experiments on model adaptation after deployment. It does not establish that typing a single ordinary message into any commercial chatbot removes its safeguards.
Re-evaluate the adapted system
The relevant distinction is between the safety behaviour of a released model and that of a model after further training. A deployment team cannot assume that evaluations of the original version still describe an adapted version. The researchers’ findings concern their tested methods and settings. They support checking the resulting system again rather than treating upstream alignment as a permanent property inherited by every downstream model.
