An acquisition agreement
Stripe announced on 19 August that it had agreed to acquire OpenRouter. The gateway gives developers access to more than 400 models from over 80 providers, according to the release. Stripe wants to add request routing and token optimisation to its existing revenue and billing infrastructure.
Choosing a model has a price
OpenRouter routes requests using factors such as task complexity, speed, price and reliability. Stripe’s argument is that AI companies need to manage that cost side alongside collecting revenue from customers. The announcement names NVIDIA, Zoom and Lovable among OpenRouter users. It gives no purchase price and does not describe the transaction as closed. Developers’ immediate concern remains continuity of API access and commercial terms as integration plans develop.
