A national programme

Bermuda’s government announced plans on 19 January to expand blockchain-based financial infrastructure with support from Circle and Coinbase. The companies intend to provide tools for government, banks, insurers, smaller businesses and consumers. Digital-finance education and technical onboarding are part of the proposal.

From ambition to adoption

The announcement frames expensive and restrictive payment access as a problem for local businesses. It describes using digital assets for everyday financial activity, rather than only trading them. Further participation and consumer initiatives were planned around the Bermuda Digital Finance Forum in May. Calling the country an onchain economy is the programme’s ambition; the statement does not establish that all national payments or public services had already moved to blockchain infrastructure.
