Existing claims, digital representation

BNY announced on 9 January that its Digital Assets platform could represent participating clients’ deposit balances onchain. The initial uses concern collateral and margin workflows. BNY describes the entries as mirrors of existing demand-deposit claims against the bank, which continue to be recorded in its traditional systems. The announcement therefore concerns how bank money is represented and used, rather than the launch of a new retail cryptocurrency. BNY deposit announcement.

A permissioned operating environment

The capability runs on BNY’s private, permissioned blockchain under its established risk, compliance and control frameworks. The bank says it aims to support programmable cash and, in future, rules-based near-real-time cash movements for institutional clients. Those planned benefits should be distinguished from the launch’s documented scope. Faster settlement and improved liquidity are objectives BNY sets out, without publishing a measured improvement per transaction. The milestone adds a form of onchain bank money to institutional infrastructure, with the underlying bank claim and conventional records retained alongside the new digital representation.
