Circle receives a New York limited-purpose trust charter

Circle announced on July 31 that the New York Department of Financial Services granted a limited-purpose trust charter to Circle Internet Trust Company LLC, which will operate as Circle New York Trust.

The authorisation adds a state trust-company structure to the group’s regulatory arrangements. Circle previously received a New York BitLicense in 2015. The announcement does not set out a detailed schedule of new customer products, pricing or service migration. A charter belongs to the authorised entity and its permitted activities; it should not be treated as a blanket endorsement of every token, blockchain application or partner connected to the group. For institutions evaluating Circle, the useful next questions concern which entity contracts with them and which services fall within its authorisation.
