Files move into the conversation

Google says Gemini users can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and other files directly in a chat. In its 29 October announcement, the company said people can expand a file to full screen, type changes themselves, highlight passages to ask questions, or ask Gemini to refine content. The update brings manual editing and AI-assisted revisions closer together. Google says PDF preview and editing work on both the web and mobile. Other supported formats, including Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, plain text and code, are supported on the web only.

What the rollout changes

Google says the features are available in all languages and locations where the Gemini app is available. Its example starts with uploaded handwritten lecture notes and turns them into a PDF study guide, which the user can then edit or ask Gemini to revise. The distinction between formats matters for people moving between devices: a PDF can be handled on mobile, but the other named formats need the web interface. The announcement describes the editing workflow rather than a guarantee that generated information will be accurate, so users still need to check facts and review the resulting file before sharing it.
