An early test for computing in space
Google says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite has generated its first AI response in orbit, an early milestone in its research into space-based computing. The company said on October 30 that it had sent a prompt to an onboard Gemma 4 model and received the response during a ground-station pass.
Google launched the prototype on October 1 and says it has since powered up its host and tensor processing unit hardware and run initial machine-learning tests. The company plans further tests to assess how the chips perform under the thermal stress and radiation conditions of space. It is targeting a later experiment with two interconnected satellites in 2027.
The result demonstrates a limited research test, not an operational orbital data center. The broader proposal still depends on solving questions about reliability, power, communications and costs before space-based AI computing could be deployed at scale.
