The clock can start before your purchase

“Seven years of updates” sounds simple until you ask when the clock starts and which updates count. Google’s Pixel policy ties the support period to when the device first became available on the US Google Store. A buyer who purchases a phone much later does not receive a fresh seven-year period from their transaction date.

Support language can also separate Android version updates from security updates. Those are different commitments: an OS upgrade changes the platform release, while security updates address vulnerabilities. A product page that says “software updates” should be checked against the manufacturer’s policy for the exact model.

Check the model and distribution

Policies may vary by device family, carrier or country. Samsung’s mobile security page lists the products in its update scope and current cadence categories; inclusion in a monthly or quarterly bulletin is not the same as an identical guaranteed end date for every model. The list can change as products age and regional releases differ.

For a used or discounted phone, verify the model code and its original first-sale date, then look for the official support policy. A retailer’s listing may repeat a headline promise without explaining whether the phone is already partway through that window.

A better comparison

Compare the promised end date, the number of major operating-system upgrades, the security-patch schedule and the way the manufacturer defines “available.” Also check whether the policy applies to all variants or only selected models. If you depend on security updates for work or banking, the remaining support period at the price you will pay is more useful than the original headline duration.

The documentation is not a forecast of exact monthly delivery dates. Manufacturers can publish policies, but carrier testing and region-specific rollout schedules still affect when a particular handset receives a release. Treat the commitment as a coverage window, then use the device’s update page to track delivery.
