The announcement

Tether introduced Scudo on 6 January as a unit of account for Tether Gold, XAU₮. One Scudo represents one-thousandth of a troy ounce of gold, or one-thousandth of an XAU₮ token. The aim is to make prices and transfers easier to express without long decimal fractions.

This is a denomination change, not a new backing arrangement. Tether says the underlying structure and physical-gold backing of XAU₮ remain the same. A smaller unit can make an amount easier to read, but does not remove exposure to the gold price, custody arrangements or the product’s issuance and redemption terms. The announcement describes a payment-use ambition, rather than evidence of widespread merchant acceptance.
