The lower entry price

Apple introduced AirPods 5 on 9 September, bringing active noise cancellation to its $129 open-ear model. A $149 configuration adds a wireless charging case, longer battery life and on-stem volume control. Apple scheduled availability for 18 September. The release also includes Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness.

Apple says the new acoustic architecture removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Its claim is specific to that predecessor, rather than a comparison with sealed in-ear headphones. Siri AI features rely on a compatible iPhone, and Live Translation remains subject to feature requirements. The purchasing distinction is now less about whether cancellation exists and more about charging, controls and the surrounding Apple device setup.
