A new display and a new way to interact

Apple has unveiled redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with a tandem OLED display and touch input, marking the first time touch has come to the Mac. Announced on October 28, the laptops use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and are thinner and lighter than their predecessors, according to Apple. The company calls the screen PROLED XDR and says it supports a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz and peak HDR and SDR brightness of 2,000 nits. Apple says the machines offer up to 24 hours of battery life, depending on use, along with Thunderbolt 5 and a 12-megapixel camera. Preorders opened with the announcement, and availability is scheduled to begin November 6. The touch interface is a significant change for a product line long built around a keyboard and trackpad; its usefulness will depend on how software developers adapt their applications.
