A new route for app developers

Apple opened developer betas for its version-27 operating systems and Xcode on 8 June. Its WWDC developer announcement expanded the Foundation Models framework into a Swift interface for on-device models with image input, server models and custom skills.

Updates to App Intents connect an app's content and actions to Siri AI's personal context and onscreen awareness. Apple also introduced Core AI for running custom models on device. These changes give developers several integration paths rather than requiring every AI feature to be a separate chatbot screen.

Xcode 27 extends coding-agent work with planning, interactive conversations and tools for checking code and previews. Apple describes connections to models and agents from multiple providers, with plug-ins for skills and external tools.

The public rollout came later

Apple's 14 September software update records the public rollout across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and other platforms. Siri AI began as an English-language beta. Some server-based intelligence features have daily limits, and feature availability still depends on supported hardware and regions.

The June news changed what developers could build and test; September changed what users could install. That distinction matters for app teams scheduling compatibility work. A framework being available in a developer beta does not mean an app's resulting feature is ready, distributed or accessible to every customer. The archive treats these as stages of one platform transition.
