The version is only a starting point
A phone and headphones can both advertise Bluetooth 5 or Bluetooth 6 and still differ in the audio features they support. The Bluetooth Core Specification evolves the underlying radio and protocol, while named capabilities such as LE Audio and Auracast rely on additional profiles, codecs and product implementation. A version number alone does not tell a buyer which of those functions are present.
LE Audio runs over Bluetooth Low Energy, unlike Classic Audio. The Bluetooth SIG describes LE Audio as adding the LC3 codec, hearing-aid support and broadcast audio. A device maker still has to build and qualify those capabilities in the actual product.
Check both ends of the connection
For LE Audio playback, the phone or transmitter and the headphones or hearing aid need compatible LE Audio support. The SIG says source and sink products must use the same approach, though a product can support both Classic Audio and LE Audio. Existing Classic Audio accessories do not automatically become LE Audio devices through a software update; the manufacturer determines whether a specific product can be upgraded.
Auracast is broadcast audio: one source can send a stream that multiple compatible receivers can join. Public venues may use it for a shared TV or announcement feed. The receiver needs the right support and, for a closed broadcast, the required access information. “Bluetooth” on the spec sheet does not establish that this feature is available.
A useful shopping checklist
Look for explicit terms in both product specifications: LE Audio, Auracast, LC3, and the supported operating modes. Then check whether the feature requires a particular phone, app, firmware version, region or accessory. A headset can support a newer core version while leaving a buyer without a desired broadcast or hearing-assistance feature.
Bluetooth SIG’s own FAQs note that compatibility depends on the implementation and that devices supporting LE Audio may also keep Classic Audio. This is why the feature name and the exact model matter more than the biggest version number in an advertisement.
