A target, not a completed total
Cohere said on 29 October that its Series E financing had reached an initial close and was targeting up to C$7 billion. Schwarz Group is leading the round, with participation from investors including NVIDIA and the Government of Canada, the Toronto-based company said.
The target is not the amount confirmed at the first close: Cohere did not disclose that figure. Its announcement says the targeted round would represent a C$35.7 billion valuation. The company develops AI models and tools for enterprises, including organizations with requirements around data control and where systems operate.
The sovereign AI pitch
Cohere says it plans to use the financing to build frontier AI capability outside the United States and China. In a separate post, its founders argue that countries and organizations need choices about the infrastructure, legal frameworks and accountability behind AI systems.
The size and timing of a final close remain important distinctions for readers following the financing. A funding target signals the company’s ambitions; it does not establish that the full amount has already been received.
