An assistant grounded in tabs
Mistral and Mozilla announced on 16 September that Firefox Smart Window beta would use Mistral models for users in France and North America. The assistant can work from browser tabs to help with searches or revisit information a user previously encountered. The United Kingdom and Germany were scheduled to follow later in the year.
The announcement states that conversations are not saved on Mozilla’s servers by default and that partners agree to zero data retention. Those are stated service conditions, not proof that no processing occurs outside the browser. The rollout also makes regional language adaptation part of the partnership. A browser assistant’s utility depends on the information it can see and the controls around that access, as well as the model supplying its answers.
