Faster portable storage

Samsung unveiled its P9 and P7 portable SSDs on 26 August at Gamescom. Both use USB4. Samsung rates the flagship P9 for sequential reads up to 4,000MB/s and writes up to 3,800MB/s, and calls its 8TB version the first USB4 portable SSD at that capacity and speed. The P7 is positioned for everyday use and is rated for up to 2 metres of drop resistance.

The P9’s claimed throughput depends on a compatible USB4 host and cable; it will not reach those rates through every USB-C connection. Samsung said global availability would begin in September, with capacities and prices varying by model. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent sustained-transfer tests.
